Open Question: my homepage seems to leave out several "layers" of color. Why?

my computer had to be rebuilt recently. The same friend who built it originally, rebuilt it. He only loaded the basics and didn't set something right. My e-mail pg. and home pg. have lots of white rectangles and sm. sqs. but nothing in them, which should NOT be blank. For instance. in e-mailwhere you put a check mark if you want to delete an item it doesn't show the checkmark, however, if you click on it anyway it does delete it. On the homepage under "change appearance" I like to choose "Passions" so I can get purple background. Now I can't get it to change AT ALL!!! I hate complaining, but I sure am frustrated. Any help you can give will be wonderful. I've tried EVERTHING possible. It's not an AT&T thing, but a software problem. That's what AT&T's tech support told me.
